The prairie and the Rockford Brick & Tile Company site connect the park with Iowa's agricultural history: the settlement of the prairie and agricultural drainage. For more information on Iowa's agricultural history visit the Silos and Smokestack National Heritage Area website.
The Fossil & Prairie Park became Iowa's 93rd State Preserve in 2006 based on its unique biological, geological, and historical features.
At the time of Iowa's settlement, prairie was the dominating landscape. The Fossil & Prairie Park Preserve contains over 60 acresof native prairie. Hiking trails encourage visitors to explore the colorful displays, throughout the seasons, once viewed by thier ancestors.
Proof of the exitance of the Rockford Brick & Tile Company at the Park's location are the remains of a quarry where blue shale was collected to produce agricultural drainage tiles and four bee hive kilns where this product was made.
This 400 acre park preserve contains many unique features.
