Prairie Heritage Day 2007

Prairie Heritage Day was held Saturday, September 8th, 2007. The day began with the 9th Annual 5K Fun Run and 1 mile walk. The Fun Run is a unique 5K cross country course that begins at the edge of Rockford. On the course you pass the site of the Rockford Brick & Tile Company and remaining bee-hive kilns, along the edge of the quarry where Devonian fossils are found, then through native Iowa prairies.

We celebrated our heritage and learned about how our early settlers worked to survive on the prairie. Volunteers demonstrated cooking fry bread and popcorn over an open fire, candle dipping, branding, and pressing apples to cider. Visitors had the opportunity to imagine life in a reconstructed 1880's log house.

Children attending had the opportunity to play "pioneer" games such as corn cob darts, rolling the hoop and sack races. The 3rd Annual "Giant's" Contest had 25 entries displaying giant sunflowers, pumpkins, cucumbers, & gourd.
